Research

Dr. McWatt is primarily an education researcher with a focus in the processes of teaching and learning in human anatomy. He conducts research that ranges from comprehensive assessments of authentic course environments to mechanistic research related to cognitive processes. He also looks at program- and discipline-wide educational contexts in medical education to obtain global perspectives. His current research includes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods projects and primarily focuses on authentic teaching and learning strategies in anatomy, like drawing and alternative grading practices, and their impacts on phenomena like student approaches to learning and spatial ability training.
